READING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES AT THE THIRD SEMESTER STUDENTS OF STKIP-PGRI LUBUKLINGGAU

Everywhere people find out written in the English that forces people to read and interpret the meaning of the text. For example; banners, direction, thing’s instruction and others. Can be sure that English be the challenges that must be faced by Indonesian people in everyday life, so they need to learn it well in order to keep develop of the times in the modern era.
English uses as the international language to do communication between people in the world, by mastering English well they easily to create relationship in all of field. In mastery English there are four skills that mast be understand such as: listening, reading, writing and speaking. All of them must be mastery well to able do relationship with other people in the world.
English teaches since Elementary till university level at state who first and second language non English, it can be said that English as foreign language. In Indonesia English as firs foreign language, so it is first foreign language that teaches at the school. One of skill that be strong problem in learning English is reading because English and Indonesia has differences from the written text and meaning, so Indonesian’s students must study hard to understand the meaning of the English text. Students have difficulty in translate the meaning from the text both word by word or general in meaning, so it is big problem that must be solve by students in mastery reading English skill. Lot of students gets the meaning from English text by lexical meaning, they translate based on word by word so the meaning is has no grammatical and confusing in meaning.
Process understanding meaning to get information from the text that conveyed by the writer can be said as reading activity.  It is clear that reading is a process that has to do with language, therefore, students must be assisting to respond to the symbol-visual which image the same auditory sign that they have previously responded. While the main purpose of reading to seek and obtain information, including the content of the meaning of the passage. The meaning is intimately related to the purpose or our intensive in reading. To success in reading skill, students must have strategies that must be used; they are several reading such as Previewing: reviewing titles, section headings, and photo captions to get a sense of the structure and content of a reading selection. Predicting, Skimming and scanning, guessing from context, paraphrasing.

Based on the statement above, the researcher interested to know students’ strategies in mastery English reading skill at the third semester at STKIP PGRI Lubuklinggau. Researcher will take subject 60 students from six study program, namely biology, psychical, mathematics, history, Indonesia and English study program. Each study program will choose ten people that take by high, middle and lower score English general on the result of final examination of semester two. In this research, the researcher uses qualitative research that focus on case study to know the problematic that faced by students naturally. The data will collect by giving test, in dept interview and after the data collected the data will analyzes and describe the result clearly. So the writer interested to take a research in reading skill entitled ’’Reading and Learning Strategies at the Third Semester Students of STKIP-PGRI Lubuklinggau”.
